Quoting a two-time PFL MVP and member of the non-existent (but if it did exist) NTL/PFL Hall of Fame: "The PFL Summer Championship game (my team wasn't in it) was a classic and one of the most exciting games I've seen in any league. Dan Z's team was down by around 10pts with perhaps 90 seconds remaining and came charging back with a combination of steals, turnovers and missed layups by Les Fennecs. They managed to tie the game, but fouled Jake Andrews with 3.2 seconds left. Jake missed the first free throw - serious tension building now - he looked like he would rather be ANYWHERE but at the free throw line at that moment – then swished the 2nd. Dan's team quickly got the ball upcourt after the free throw and Steve Luszcz went up for an 18 footer to win it and got stuffed – cleanly - as the buzzer went off! It made for a fun end to the season (although my teams have underperformed the past 2 seasons) and has me revved up for the Fall season."
This is the second season in a row that the undefeated #1 seeded to team has lost in the Championship game. Great job everyone!

Week 1 Recap
Want to know what happened at the PFL Garden on Saturday, March 12, 2010? Here's the recap:
Game One
Amherst Lord Jeffs (1-0) 48 - Bowdoin Polar Bears (0-1) 39.
Lord Jeff (Nick) Williams is back from injury list exile and as dominant and unflappable as ever. 5 assists (with only 1 turnover that must have been a dropped pass) and 11 easy points. Of course, every Robin has a Batman and Ben Berry filled that role, proving dynamic, as well, but this time on defense (8 boards, 2 blocks, 1 steal). Nice to see Nick leading his team in minutes played again. Even though the opposing Polar Bears drowned in a torrent of turnovers, I wouldn't put them on the Endangered Teams list yet. A poor three point FG percentage (15%) and dismal FT performance (5/13) had them smelling like they just came out of a dumpster. Still, they're cuddly, aren't they? Note to Bears: a little less dribbling and holding the ball over your head, looking, looking, looking, will lead to better ball movement, a tired and compromised opponent's defense and higher percentage shots. Oh, yeah, I gotta say, Jeffman Bruce Garr is as automatic from 15 as anyone in the league.(Missing Jeff: Josh Pepin; Absent Bears: Lawrence Sheh, Max Weinstein).
Box Score Game One
Game Two
Tufts Jumbos (1-0) 39 - Williams Purple Cows (0-1) 37. Former Jumbo, Khalilah Ummah, who never stopped being a Jumbo, is a Jumbo again. (BTW, KhaUmm is the one who suggested the NESCAC team names.) Two things to say about Special K: she has the best timing on her drop-step of any PFL player in history and she made the clutch FTs with 2 seconds and the score tied that won this game. Jumbo mate, Randy Richard, went 2/2 on 3s (because he took his NTL lessons seriously). These Jumbos cast a large shadow on the Spring PFL landscape. Meanwhile, if it were acceptable for The Commissioner of the League to say he's rooting for a team to do well, he'd say it is these Purple Cows. But it isn't acceptable, so he won't. If I could root for them it would because they, of all teams, need to figure out how to play better than the mere sum of their parts. They have the enviable task of needing to use some combination of the following to succeed: ball movement, dedication to team defense, some offensive scheme or idea beyond "just playing", good FT shooting, a determined mind-set that includes taking care of the ball (minimizing turnovers). If they succeed, as a basketball guy, I will be happy. Meanwhile, Bovine Lou Wang went 4/5 on 3s (just as he does at the "Advanced" Skills & Scrimmage NTL practices on Thursday nights at Matignon HS). Tim Fredette was out of the barn early, hoofing his way to 4 offensive boards. Keep up the good work, Tim. (Jumbos all there; stray Purple Cows: Jake Andrews, Greg Herr)
Box Score Game Two
Game Three
Middlebury Panthers (1-0) 40 - Trinity Bantams (0-1) 39. The Wright Brothers, Twin Towers, a bunch of guys who work somewhere together, a kid named Eamon, the Middlebury Panthers are chock full of fun stuff. Another thing they have going for them is the reigning Three Point King from the first (and only) NTL Skills Challenge, Matt "Big Shot" Middleton. Big shot cuz he knocked down the big one last Saturday. The Panthers prowled to victory without one player in double figure scoring. Ponytailed Panther Peter dazzled with the best post passes seen around Porter Square since Bill Walton lived across the street on Avon Hill. The Panthers are gonna be tough. Do Carruthers, McIntyre and D Duane look like Bantams? It'll be interesting to see how they utilize the considerable skills of Marcia Whithead, Kratka and the mayhem defenders, Luszcz and Frappier. Still, 20 turnovers? How does that happen? Many saw them as preseason favorites, Big Three and all. (Bantam not there: Jon Frappier)
Box Score Game Three
Game Four
Colby Mules (1-0) 50 - Connecticut Camels (0-1) 39. Fans were anticipating the debut of Sara Lewis, but when she was a no-show, had to settle for being treated to 13/27 shooting from Chrisses Ryan and Cassel. Newcomer Mike Cox was active. Reigning MVP Dan Ziminski was in near MVP form, though it's always a tough, very tough matchup with Johnny (ya gotta call him Johnny) Hurley. The Mules stubbornly hung on to the ball, meaning fewer turnovers than assists. Yay for that! The Camels played a little bit like they needed a drink. Of water. PG Hurley was alive and well but where were the others? Pinchook, former MVP R Wang and Ranjith combine for 4/19? Maybe they need to saddle up and go hear #38 Dave Scott on Friday nights, get them to band together, Nine Camels all singing scat!

Week 5 Recap
Want to know what happened at the PFL Garden on Saturday, December 12, 2009? Here's the recap:
Game One
Xavier Musketeers (4-1) 54 - Temple Owls (1-4) 42 The game started 15 minutes late. Players who were on time waited. Staff that were on time waited. Players who were on time for the next game and the game after that and the game after that and the game after that waited and waited and waited and waited. PFL Procedures say we wait five minutes and if a team doesn't have enough players to start a game (4), the game is forfeited. We caved. We were soft and ready to hear excuses. We didn't impose the rule that is necessary if we are to have at least a little order to the day. We all felt stupid just sitting there waiting and waiting. Are we playing? Will they show? Is that them? Did someone see a car pull up? Hope they're okay. Please do the other 89 players and refs and staff the favor of being on time for your games. Thanks.

Week 4 Recap
Want to know what happened at the PFL Garden on Saturday, December 5, 2009? Here's the recap:
Game One
St Louis Billikens (2-2) 49 - U Mass Minutemen (1-3) 39. Mark Salem was Rondo-ish. (Missing Billikens: David Faverman, Ryan Shea, Alex Scutro; Missing Minuteman: Tania Phelan, Conroy Jackson)
Box Score Game One
Game Two
St Bonnie Bonnies (1-3) 45 - Charlotte 49ers (3-1) 41. In the biggest upset of the young season, in OT, The Bonnies win in a thriller. Big shot of the game? Marvin Shin cooly drops in an 18 footer from the left wing/baseline to take the lead with 18 seconds remaining. Ice that Shin! Lou Wang sticks big FTs to clinch. Still, If only the 49ers had scored 49 points. (All players in attendance)
Box Score Game Two
Game Three

Game Four
Dayton Flyers (3-1) 49 - Fordham Rams (2-2) 45. Maybe if Grace Humphrey had played more than 9 mins, the Rams might have won. You know, karma and all. (Flyers out: Rachel Viner IR, Lawrence Sheh, "White Magic"; All Rams there)
Box Score Game Four
Game Five
Richmond Spiders (3-1) 56 - Temple Owls (1-3) 46. The greatest collection of players on one team in PFL history rolls on. Random thought: I think David Duane, overall, inside and out, is the most skilled player in PFL over the past few seasons. He could shoot better FTs, but . . . (All Spiders in the web: Owls not in the gym: Khalilah, Ed Wolf)

Week 2 Recap
Want to know what happened at the PFL Garden on Saturday, November 14, 2009? Here's the recap:
Game One
Charlotte 49ers (2-0) 46 - Temple Owls (0-2) 44. This was a great game! An Instant Classic! A PFL game with more assists than turnovers! Let us all rejoice! Let's get right to the point: David Duane (with his dad out with a torn rotator cuff, David is sort of Chief Daddy Owl in-residence) made the niftiest pass of the season: a no-look, almost tip-touch off-the-dribble from outside the right wing to a lone team member (his team) under the hoop on the left side for an easy score. My wife, Ellie, the statkeeper said, "Wow!" Another great play of the game was by Ryan Shuman. With the score tied and but a few seconds left, he defected a pass in the backcourt, grabbed the loose ball and while driving to the hoop looked at the clock saw maybe two seconds remaining, drove faster and flipped up a Rondo-like un-layup layup that kissed the glass and nestled home. Bert Ware and Ron Vogl also really stood out for some nice dishes. (Expect a lot of food references in the next couple of weeks.) Mara Schanfield gets herself ready to shoot BEFORE the catch better than anyone in the league. She thinks ahead. (Missing 49er: Nora Dowley; Missing Owls: Josh Pepin, Steve Luszcz, Ed Wolf [can a Wolf be an Owl?).
Box Score Game One
Game Two
Xavier Musketeers (1-1) 30 - Fordham Rams (1-1) 14. As good as Game One was, this was bad. Think Detroit Pistons circa 1988 in a pre-season intrasquad scrimmage with no referees in the gym. Bad Boys everywhere. Ugly. Grace Humphrey had a couple of nice steals by getting in the passing lane. Jim Vlahkis threw a behind the back bounce pass that skidded, just as he hoped, along the baseline to an open teammate. John Hurley's dad must be a coach because the kid is oozing fundamentals. He doesn't just think pass first, he thinks pass all the time and knows when to shoot if he's given a nice pass. Other than that - and some nice hustle by Jake and Evan and Siobhan - it was no fun. Next week is good basketball redemption week. (Ram not in attendance: lefty Cody Wilson; Mouseketeers without ears: Jean Millette and Tom Hamel.)
Box Score Game Two
Game Three
U Mass Minutemen (1-1) 50 - St. Bonaventure Bonnies (0-2) 39. Larry Bavis had 6 assists, 0 turnovers, took 1 shot and went home happy. Kayron Wright looked like a 17 y/o Olajuwan; he was shaking the house with his post moves! Jon Frappier is BACK and running the floor and The Minutemen were finding him. But The Bonnies are no bunnies and they will bounce (hop) back from this defeat. Mike Bernstein missed last week so he decided to take double his normal number of shots. Interesting. Sandy Kendall hit a three from the top of the key like it was a game of Streak. Her big bro, Steve, was perfect at the line, and a perfectly fine gentleman, too. Ray "Suavio" Pavio submitted a double-double and Chris Railey sent notice that you let him catch the ball on the right low post at your peril. (Not available: UMM Max Weinstein, Tania Phelan, Bob Aloisi; Bonnie amissing: Josh Kratka)
Box Score Game Three
Game Four
LaSalle Explorers (1-1) 54 - Dayton Flyers (1-1) 50. In the Grinnell system that The Explorers are employing, they seek to keep the tempo up, they press after every score and after every miss, they want to shoot quickly and they want to shoot threes. In short, they want to make the other team play their game. The Flyers obliged and wound up paying the price. (That sounds grimmer than it really is; they just lost the game, that's all!) Biggest problems for The Flyers? Turnovers: 20. And they got whistled 17 times versus The Explorers 7. That's big: check out the free throw discreancy. Lynden Douglas showed a whole lot more than he did last week. Amanda Walling has the best free throw stroke in PFL history. Best play of the game: Timothy Francis-Wright (The Chief") was frustrated by a non-call (he thought he drew a charge - when you don't get that call it hurts in more ways than one) so after running up the court and realizing that he was about to commit mayhem, took himself out of the game, sat next to me, muttered and sputtered non-niceties under his breath before sanity and a smile returned to his ever cheerful face. (Flying out of radar range: Lawrence Sheh, Juan Ortega, Rachel Viner [IR]; All Explorers on board)
Box Score Game Four
Game Five
Richmond Spiders (2-0) 61 - St. Louis Billikens (1-1) 47. Let us state the obvious: the Spiders have the greatest collection of talent ever assembled in a PFL season. They have everything: rebounding, shooting, size, grit, unselfishness, a Kiwi, and "the force known as Carruthers". They shot 51.1% on Saturday. We are looking forward to their first 60% game. (When unnamed league officials assembled this team, Carruthers was limping like Chester in Gunsmoke and David Scott hadn't made a shot since Dick Cheney told a truth.) Anyway, one of the fun things will be when they lose. Big Billiken, Shannon Holmes, showing up near halftime in surfer shorts wasn't going to be the way to do it. Kudos to Alex Doerr who did all he could. And Ryan Shea went absolutely Maravichian in the first half, shooting threes off one leg! Not bad! Plus he had no Ts! Oh, the Spiders netted 13 of 17 FTS. Biilis just 8 of 20. Make 7 more of those and it's a different game. (Absent Spider: Mike Christie; Missed-her Billiken: Neelam Thacker)

Week 1 Recap
Want to know what happened at the PFL Garden on Saturday, November 7, 2009? Here's the recap:
Game One
Fordham Rams (1-0) 54 - LaSalle Explorers (0-1) 32. It was a balanced scoring effort by The Rams: 10, 9, 8, 7, 7 is pretty balanced. Also, they were unfazed by the fullcourt (or intended full-court) pressure of LaSalle. The Explorers seemed to be lost in their own schemes, but player/coach McIntyre has steered his squads to PFL Championshps the past two seasons, and we expect their style of play can make up 20 points before many games pass. (All players in attendance).
Box Score Game One
Game Two
Dayton Flyers (1-0) 42 - Xavier Musketeers (0-1) 40. The Dayton Flyers have some true aerial sorts and others who are more grounded, like Flexible Flyers, you know, the type that just skids along. Still, it was an impressive display of the game of basketball they put on last Saturday, stamping themselves, I'd say, as league favorites. They shot 1-12 on 3s, turned the ball over 5 more times than their opponents, gave up 5 more offensive rebounds, had 8 fewer steals and still won the game! Hunh? Simply put, the other guys, the Musketeers, could not shoot straight. 1 for 11 on FTs? Blind fold me and I'll make more than 1 out of 11 FTs shooting lefty hooks. Newcomer John Hurley looked good though, didn't he? (All players in attendance.)
Box Score Game Two
Game Three
St. Louis Billikens (1-0) 36 - Temple Owls (0-1) 32. The Owls took a stunning 30 FTs and lost the game. (That guy, Vogl, he gets all the calls!) Newcomer Billiken, Ryan Shea, filled up the stat sheet with 30 shots, 16 rebounds, 4 steals and 1 technical. (Referee teed him up for a "get that 'bleep' outta here" taunt. Except he didn't say bleep. I guess I might have been excited if I'd just had my first career block, too. Let's hope he catches the spirit of the league, quickly.) (Can we get Neelam a few more touches? I'm seeing her open a lot.) Gotta love The Owls. They transition from defense to offense and back again by just rotating their heads. Watch them! It's weird! (Not available: SLB Shannon Holmes; TO David Duane)
Box Score Game Three
Game Four
Richmond Spiders (1-0) 50 - St. Bonaventure Bonnies (0-1) 35. This game was closer than the final score. In the end, the Spiders webbed their way to better shots and turned it over fewer times. Mike Christie, Tom Villani and Rob Black combined for a nifty 5 for 5 FGs! Nice. 'Dr Z' giving them shot opportunities they cannot miss. The Bonnies were fun. We expect more in the coming weeks from Chris Tsai and the Kendall twins. (Absent: RS Marcia Whitehead; SBB Mike Bernstein, Ray "Suavio" Pavio, and, most importantly, Chris Railey)
Box Score Game Four
Game Five
Charlotte 49ers (1-0) 35 - U Mass Minutemen (0-1) 34 (OT) The whole thing was a defensive struggle, if you want to know the truth (with a little rustiness mixed in). It may look like OT was sudden death ("First point wins") but, in reality, only one point was scored in that 5 minutes. Neither team topped 22% FG shooting over the 45 minutes of play. You make 2 out of 9 shots and you win this game. If you added up all the free throws and field goals made (13 + 25), it still does not beat the number of turnovers committed (39). Damn stat sheet! The 49ers won without the benefit of a good assist to turnover ratio by R Wang and S Galloway. Let's chalk it up to "getting to know my supporting cast." (Did Kayron Wright really hit a three?) (Absent: 49ers: Kevin Chin, Nora Dowley, Bert Ware)

Week 11 Recap
Want to know what happened at the PFL Garden on Saturday, February 6, 2009? Here's the recap:
PFL Playoffs - March Madness in February!
Game One
(Miami Sweet 43 - Washington Biscuits 41) The #5 seed Miami Sweet (likened here last week to the NY Yankees) roared out to a 15-2 lead. Formidable. Scary. They were flexing their muscles. The Commissioner, enjoying the game from a reclined halfcourt seat, thought it inappropriate that players from around the league came up suggesting post-game drug-testing as a fun PFL innovation. "Please, can't I just watch the game?" Meanwhile, the #4 seed Biscuits slowly emerged. They rose to the occasion - behind four second half three-pointers (Jona Edwards 2, David Duane 1, Josh Pepin 1) - enough to actually take the lead in the last two minutes, 41-40. Impressive comeback. They just didn't quit. But the Sweet are sweet and a free throw by former MVP Raemin Wang and a delectable, leaning, falling away three-seconds on the clock, left side jumper that would have done any player anywhere proud by Nick Williams put the frosting on this cake. I say these players are clean. I say they are good. I say once again they are built for the playoffs. If Nick hadn't been the one to make that last shot, we'd be giving the game ball to Bert Ware, who was banking in threes like 'Toine! (Where's the wiggle, Bert?) Box Score Game One
Game Two
(Sacramento Things 33 - Golden State Worriers 30) The #3 seed Things showed they are more than just a team with the best mascot. (I love that hand coming out of the box that they huddle around in time-outs!) They are a group with balanced scoring, team rebounding, and a pretty good dose of basketball intelligence. Scott Galloway, Mark Salem and Gordon Vidaver hound the other team into rushed shots and turnovers. Che Silva runs the show like it's Oscars Night. (I know, that makes no sense.) Jeff Larimer and Brian Rogalski decimate opponents on the glass. Am I leaving anyone out? Oh, Larry Bavis, in addition to rescuing teammate's sneaks from the trash, plays point forward, unfettered, to perfection all while never shutting up. A Thing of beauty. Meanwhile, the Worriers never quite entered their golden state. They had their chances. Mark Pinchook was as steady as say, Tim Duncan, never taking a bad shot. Did they have only two assists because they weren't moving the ball or because their shooters weren't hitting? Aw, just keep moving the ball to the open player; just keep playing hard and having fun. Don't worry about it! Box Score Game Two
Game Three
(Boston Sell Tix 49 - Orlando Poof 48) Quoting unnamed yet deemed reliable sources who were intimately involved: "Beth [O'Brien] dropped in about 30 points in the first half and Tom hit the winning shot on an awesome drive while having the shot challenged by Cassel and BC - it was sick..." And "It was definitely a back and forth game- great game to play in and I think a great game to watch. We played very well, holding off their very physical play and high energy (especially early) by not getting too aggravated and letting it affect our play. We just pushed right through it. We won by a point, and the game stats were very even, including boards. It was telling for me that we held Bill to 10 points on 1 of 5 shooting and 8-9 from the line, with only 5 boards. Juan and Dan had some nice 2 man plays, Chris had some nice blocks (and a beautiful steal and coast to coast drive), and Jon played his usual solid D, plus he hit a key jumper down the stretch. And Beth was HUGE in the first half. A fun game." The play-by-play tells the story of a very close game: 5 ties and 11 lead changes! What? Did you think The Poof were just gonna disappear? I think the key may have been holding SK scoreless; doesn't happen often, especially in big games. Incredibly even stat sheet! Good shooting (6/14 on threes); low turnovers; decent FT%s. In other news, Ray "Suavio" Pavio missed a shot (4/5). Box Score Game Three
Game Four
Phoenix Sons 39 - Indiana Erasers 34. The Erasers should have never loaned their pencils to these Sons. The #1 next to their name is now hard to read. Is it there? Was it ever? The Indiana Apparitions. The Ghosts of Hamlet's Erasers. That mantle of being #1 seemed to weigh heavy on the Indiana shoulders. Shots that usually fall, rimmed out. What was once an easy, nifty glide to the glass was met now by determined defenders. (And the ref was letting them play.) Chizzy Uchendu kept his average dribbles per possession to the low teens and trusted his teammates more. Chizzy Dub-Dub (double-double). Louis Wang goes to the hoop like Chris Paul/Tony Allen/Mike Ditka with a lefthand! Another tight contest: eight ties and five second half lead changes! The Sons of Defense kept MVP candidate 'Drew Varley away from game-winning chances and limited Big Shot No-Miss FT Josh Kratka to just a hoop. "The Chief" with just three rebounds? Sons' strategy of keeping his match-up away from the hoop on offense gave them easy second chance scores ('cuz Chief wasn't there to rebound). It happens: Onion beat Secretariat, Upset upset Man 'O War. The Sons swept The Erasers off the playoff page. Box Score Game Four

Playoff Preview
#1 seed, Indiana Erasers (7-3)
The Erasers, everyone's favorite PFL team, come into the playoffs having won three of their last four. Beyond tepid. A team that relies on efficiency (1st in Fg%, 2nd in FT%), ball movement (2nd in assists), youth (well, Nicole does have another birthday coming up) and, I love this, 1st in three-point FG% defense! They get out on people! 'Nak, Jake and Co. are not passive defenders. The only complaint? How can a team with the nickname "Erasers" be 2nd to last in blocked shots? Oh, oh, don't foul Josh Kratka at the end of games: did you see he is shooting 95.2% on his FTs (21of 22)? Excuse me, but is Josh from a small town in Indiana? Erasers
#2 seed, Boston Sell Tix (7-3)
The Sell Tix, everyone's favorite PFL team, have won six of their last seven; they're scalping everybody out there! How do they do it? Well, they score more than everyone else. Three Sell Tix are in the top ten in FG%. That helps. It also helps that they have two of the strongest candidates for MIP: Chris Railey and Steve Luszcz. And Beth O'Brien, you know that Beth O'Brien can take your ticket at the door, show you to your seat and throw in a three-pointer from the third row. N-E-Time. (Channeling Mark Salem on that scripting.) Sell Tix
#3 seed, Sacramento Things (6-4)
The Things (and who isn't rooting for The Things?) are the world's hottest team. They have won six in a row. The Things are loaded and they "can show you a thing or two about a thing or two" (quoting Robert DeNiro from "This Boy's Life"). One of those things is how to shoot the "long ball". (I hate that expression.) Led by the resurgent Che' Silva, "bleeding Blue Devil" Matt Middleton and "Max is Backx" Weinstein, they lead the league in three-point FG percentage. The Things also share the thing better than anyone else, PFL assist pacesetters they are. This team is really someThings to watch. | | | | | | | | | | | |
